Title: Bringing Processes and PMO together – Best Practices

Purpose: Understanding a successful approach to establishing an IT PMO in a City Government

Presentation Abstract:

Everyone knows that we need to have processes for the Project Management Office – but how do we go about transforming an organization that has little to no standardization of processes? We will discuss the approach we took to establish a Project Services Office for IT at the City of Garland (COG). Specifically we will discuss the steps involved in our “projectized” approach, the tools and techniques we used, the processes we focused on and lessons we learned. We will also focus on the Vendor-City relationship that helped accelerate the implementation and adoption of processes, tools and continuous education resulting in an evolutionary approach that will ensure that changes and processes we implemented continue to conform to the needs of COG. Combined in this presentation are a number of areas that are important to any government body: What processes of PMBOK (PMI’s Project Management Book of Knowledge) should we focus on first? Policies, Procedures and IT Governance we needed to establish and ensure the success of all IT projects.
